The top beer gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan

On a hot summers day, there is nothing better than sitting in a beer garden with an ice-cold beer – but where are the best beer gardens in the Vale of Glamorgan?

We’ve put together our list of the top beer gardens (in no particular order), to help you choose where to go when the sun is shinning next.

Plough and Harrow, Monknash

The Plough and Harrow has barely changed in the hundreds of years that it’s been standing, with most of its original features remaining in place.

It’s a proper pub, with real ale and homecooked food, its garden is surrounded by the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan Countryside.

The Bush Inn, St Hilary

A beautiful beer garden located within the equally gorgeous 16th century pub. It’s surrounded by the Vale countryside and isn’t too far away from the coast. Whilst the weather might not always be hot and dry, it has pods and summerhouses to keep you dry and warm.

The Captains Wife, Sully

A pub filled with history and an intriguing story about its name. Selling country pub classics, alongside cask ales, fine wines, and British gin, with a beautiful beer garden overlooking Sully Island and the Bristol Channel.

The Deck, Penarth

Known best of all for being a restaurant, during the summer months it opens its jetty bar. A secluded bar serving cold beer, gins, cocktails, and BBQ food overlooking Penarth Marina.

Casa De Margarita, Penarth

A traditional Spanish tapas bar, with plenty of seating along the Esplanade. Serving wines, cocktails, spanish beers and tapas directly to your table.

The White Hart, The Old Swann Inn and Tudor Tavern, Llantwit Major

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to traditional pubs in Llantwit Major. Steeped in History, these three pubs sit in the centre of Llantwit Major and the Town’s Cenotaph. Each has its own beer garden, with beautiful flowers, seating and views – alongside traditional beer and food – why visit one beer garden when you can go to three in one day?

Fox and Hounds, Llancarfan

Situated in Llancarfan Village is the traditional country pub on the banks of a small stream and with the historic St Cadoc’s Church as its neighbour. The pub has a large, terraced area which is perfect to enjoy a chilled glass of wine or beer on a summer’s evening.

Pelican Inn, Ogmore by sea

Known for high quality food, the Pelican Inn is a unique gastro pub situated along Ogmore Road and next to Southerndown Golf Club.

Fontygary Leisure Park, Rhoose

Many people know of the Caravan Park, but it potentially has one of the best views of any Vale beer garden. To the rear of the leisure centre, you’ll find the Shoreway Bar Terrace, which serves beers, soft drinks, spirits and snacks, with plenty of seating for you to sit and look out over Fontygary Bay and the Bristol Channel.

Craft Republic, Barry

Winners of the UK’s Best Independent Craft Beer Bar or Pub in 2022 and Bear Category in the Cardiff Life Awards 2023, Craft Republic has a small beer garden perfect for groups of friends to relax with a craft beer or their own Barry Island Spirits Co drinks.

Academy 297, Barry

Cardiff has many rooftop bars, but did you know there was one in Barry? Located at the top of the Goodsheds development, Academy 297 serves cocktails, wines, beers and spirits, in a unique space at the heart of Barry Waterfront.
